TĪNG at Shangri-La: London Restaurant in the Sky

Ting in the Shangri-La Hotel is a luxury pan asian restaurant.

The Venue: Tīng is impressively situated up at a cool 128 metres with 360 degree views of the City of London, sharing the glossy entrance of the Shangri-La hotel at the Shard – the first property of this luxury hotel chain to open in the UK three years ago.

The ambiance: elegant, special occasion, dress up.

The Food:  We opted for the three course set menu with wine pairing, kicking off the evening with two signature cocktails recommended according to each of our tastes: one sweet and one sour.

My vodka yuzu martini hit the spot with the right balance of alcohol and acidity, setting the bar high for this early in the evening. Praise also for the amaretto cocktail if you prefer something sweeter.

After the ginger and carrot amuse bouche mouse (repeat five times without stuttering) we received animated explanations from our knowledgeable sommelier to prepare us for the first wine pairing.

Mushroom notes from the Voignier expertly complimented the pumpkin-and-grilled duck soup, while a Mosul Riesling enhanced the smoked salmon starter.

The Mains Arrived Beautifully Presented

The mains were equally pleasant and beautifully presented as I think my halibut with potato foam beat the husband’s grilled venison – although he begs to differ.

Two new and (again) very different wines were paired with each of the aforementioned main dishes, before finishing off with sweet wines that had exactly the right amount of sweetness to balance the deserts.

Service:  high quality and attentive. The ottoman offered for my handbag added a helpful touch and more restaurants should do this.

We also enoyed the balance between a lively atmosphere and sense of privacy.

Sour note: Unpleasantly surprised there were outdated iPhone charges offered in the loos – although lovely to even find chargers there. Android and anyone who still owns a Blackberry wins this round.

Most memorable moment: The passion with which the Tīng sommelier executed the wine pairing.

How to get there: the Shard is right next to London Bridge station – although you may want to arrive in Uber Lux to fit in with the Bentleys and Maseratis lining the entrance

Book it:  Tīng or contact reservations on +(44) 0207 234 8108. Ask for a table at the window

Will I go back? Yes and have already recommended Tīng to a number of people.
